THE ESC PRESIDENT WELCOMES THE IOC EXECUTIVE BOARD DECISION TO KEEP 15 SHOOTING EVENTS IN THE PROGRAMME FOR THE 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO

Mr. Vladimir Lisin, President of the European Shooting Confederation and the Russian Shooting Union, has issued a statement on the IOC Executive Board decision to approve the event programme for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo.

The statement says:

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee approved the event programme for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020 for the sports that were part of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the overall number of athletes in each of those sports.

The total number of events has been increased by 15. This means, there will be a total of 339 events in the sports programme of the 2020 Olympics, including 18 events in the sports that were not represented in Rio de Janeiro.

The overall number of athletes has been reduced by 285. They are redistributed in favor of the newcomers: baseball/softball, karate, sports climbing, skateboarding and surfing as well as basketball 3x3. The overall number of the participants of the 2020 Olympics will total 11.090 athletes.

It is important to note that, following the “Agenda 2020” recommendations of gender equality, the correlation between male and female events has been considerably changed, as well as the quotas for participation of men and women in those sports where the principle of gender equality was not fulfilled till now.

Thanks to the efforts of the International Shooting Sport Federation we have managed to make such a proposal to the IOC that allowed maintaining 15 events in the Olympic programme.

On the other hand, it is important to draw attention to the fact that the quota of participants of the shooting competitions has been reduced from 390 to 360. This is a result of certain stagnation, consequence of our stubborn stance on the events that, year to year, have been losing numbers of participants, popularity and audience interest.

We must not repeat mistakes of the past. New formats, such as Mixed Teams, in different events must be promoted and improved. Nobody is limiting us in creating other formats, combining different shooting events that increase the interest of youth and audience. We must strive for more than just keeping the 15 events at the 2024 Olympic Games. We must aim seek for getting more thanks to adjusting new formats and events.

Considering the near future, we must approach very attentively, perhaps with a new concept, the system of distribution of the remaining 360 quotas. This system has to motivate the Member Federations and athletes to participate in the competitions to a greater degree, while developing the shooting sport in countries and on the continents.

I welcome the decision of the IOC Executive Board that kept 15 shooting events in the programme of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo in 2020.
