ESC Challenge in Wrocław: Fresh Energy in Shooting Sports

The European Championship U23 in Wrocław has passed its midpoint. One of the main and most intriguing highlights of the tournament has been the finals of the ESC Challenge events.

The idea behind Solo and Duet is simple: bring even more spectacle and excitement to shooting sports while keeping its iconic taste for precision. Matches are faster and easier for fans to follow, where every hit or miss brings immediate consequences and athletes react directly to their opponent's moves. Challenge events have already concluded for Air Rifle, Air Pistol, and Skeet.

Victor Lindgren (Sweden), 2024 Olympic silver medalist and one of the world's top shooters, captured three gold medals in Wrocław, including a victory in Rifle Solo Men:

"I really like the ESC Challenge. It gives you a chance to showcase your skills even more and fight for a medal. Solo is a bit more challenging, but that’s exactly what makes it so exciting and really drives your urge to win. Here, every moment is about immediate impact: hit or miss.To get a hit, you need a near-perfect shot, which is a very high standard, so you have to give it your all."

Anastasija Živković (Serbia), winner of the gold medal in Rifle Solo Women, highlighted the incredible tempo and emotion of the new disciplines:

"I really love how fast and intense the Solo and Duet formats are. There is no time to overthink, so you have to stay completely focused and trust yourself, especially in the finals with all the loud cheers from the audience!"

In her view, this dynamic format makes shooting much easier for new viewers to follow. With a smile, Anastasija shared an example: her mother, who is always supportive, understood the Solo format much faster than the classic 60-shot qualification match.

Anastasija is convinced that these formats have a bright Olympic future:

"I definitely believe that these formats could bring loads of new energy to the Olympics! They make it so much easier for people who don't follow the sport to understand what's happening, and the pressure and excitement in the finals make it even more interesting."

After four ESC Challenge events, Serbia and Ukraine lead the total medal count with 5 medals each. Georgia has earned 3 medals, while Türkiye, Sweden, Greece, Cyprus, Slovakia, Poland, and Czechia have captured 1 medal each.
